The Holy Death of St. Joseph
This image of the death of Saint Joseph is based on a stained-glass window. The woman who commissioned it wanted to give it to her son, who was fascinated by the stained-glass window.
Although it is not known when exactly St. Joseph died, his absence at the foot of the Cross leads many scholars to believe that he died before the Crucifixion. Saint Joseph is considered to be the patron of a good death, since it is assumed that he died peacefully in the presence of Jesus and Mary. Here, he is painted in Jesus and Marys’ arms.
The Death of Saint Joseph serves to remind us that we all must die, and that a peaceful death surrounded by family is a blessing even as it is also a source of sadness.
This image is frequently bought for funerals. AMDG!
