When it comes to choosing the perfect gift for a Catholic baptism, those close to me know that I have always leaned towards angels. Angels are God's own spiritual servants who not only symbolize protection, but we know also guide, guard and protect each of us here on Earth, making them a cherished present for a deeply spiritual occasion.
From the Old Testament to the New, through all of Catholic tradition, angels are believed to be messengers of God, watching over and guiding individuals on their spiritual journey. Giving an angel icon as a baptism gift is a way to also give a tangible reminder and visible likeness of these invisible caretakers who are always with us.
Every human being receives the guardianship of an assigned angel. This can be found in the writings of the Church Fathers, notably St. Thomas Aquinas (ST 113, The guardianship of the good angels). This guardianship begins not just at baptism, but from conception, St. Thomas says, as can be seen in the writings of St. Jerome: "each soul has an angel appointed to guard it from its birth."
Because we cradle Catholics bring forward our children for Baptism at infancy, we are reminded of God's servants celebrating and confirming their protection of our newly-baptized baby. An angel icon commemorating this event can be lovingly displayed at home or in a nursery as a reminder of their faith and the blessings bestowed upon them during their baptism.
I have given away many angel icons as Baptism gifts over the years, and commissioned several more. I find they make excellent Catholic baptism gifts due to being a tangible sign of divinely-assigned protection, and I have found parents to be very pleased by this type of gift. I've tried to make as many of these icon prints available as possible on my shop - as you search for the best gifts of for upcoming Baptism, I would be humbled if you would consider my work.
