Saint Thomas More Icon Print

This Saint Thomas More Icon Print celebrates the admirable lawyer, statesman, royal advisor and martyr. Born in the late 1400s, More served as a close advisor to King Henry VIII and was appointed Lord Chancellor of England in 1529.

More's refusal to endorse Henry VIII's separation from the Catholic Church and the King's subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn led to his demotion from power, and later his arrest in 1534. His refusal to take an Oath to the King as the Supreme Head of the Church of England were a point of embarrassment for the King and his court. After a year of imprisonment in the Tower of London, More was tried and convicted of treason. He was executed on July 6, 1535. His final words, "I die the King's good servant, but God's first," encapsulate his profound faith and dedication to his principles. Canonized in 1935 by Pope Pius XI, Saint Thomas More is revered as a symbol of integrity and courage in the face of political pressure and persecution, with his feast day celebrated on June 22.
