Our Lady Seat of Wisdom
The Virgin Mary is depicted here holding the Child Jesus in her lap. She wears a crown as Queen of Heaven and is seated on a throne. “Seat of Wisdom” or “Throne of Wisdom” is one of the traditional portrayals of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus dating back about one thousand years in Church tradition.
In her hand she holds a scepter which is in the form of the Cross, showing that it is through the cross that Jesus rules the world and she is Queen of Heaven. The Child Jesus holds in His hand a golden globe topped with a small cross, showing that he rules over the universe through His sacrifice on the cross. This symbol is called the Globes Cruciger. The globe shape was used since pagan classical times as a symbol of the entire universe, because in the understanding of the ancients the heavens formed a sphere while enclosed the sphere of the earth. Christian artists added a cross on top of the sphere to show that they ruled through Christ.
This title for Mary is included in the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587. A long litany in honor of Our Lady, it reads in part:
Virgin most powerful,
— pray for us.
Virgin most merciful,
— pray for us.
Virgin most faithful,
— pray for us.
Mirror of justice,
— pray for us.
Seat of wisdom,
— pray for us.
Cause of our joy,
— pray for us.
Spiritual vessel,

There is a partial indulgence for reciting the litany, and several famous composers including Mozart and Palestrina set it to music. The feast day of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom is June 8th.
