Our lady of Lourdes
Since appearing to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France, Our Lady of Lourdes has become one of the most widely venerated Marian apparitions in the world. Our Lady first appeared to St. Bernadette on February 11th, 1858, which has now become her feast day. When St. Bernadette asked the apparitions who she was, Our Lady replied, “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
Each time that Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette, they prayed the rosary together. Her most famous miracle is without doubt the spring of healing water that St. Bernadette dug up under her instruction.
Our Lady of Lourdes is painted here with her rosary and surrounded by golden roses. She is shown in front of the grotto in which the apparitions took place.
This image is one of a group of eight commissioned for the Duke University Newman Center. The priest sponsoring this project wanted to feature the Marian apparitions which were most important to students from different countries around the world. Students from many countries were interviewed to select these eight apparitions of Our Lady. Together, the display is called Our Lady of The World, and the many ways that Our Lady has appeared to us remind us of her universal motherhood to all believers.
The eight images are: Our Lady of Aparecida, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Lavang, Our Lady of Manaoag, Our Lady of Kibeho, Our Lady of Vilankanni, Our lady of Lourdes, and Our Lady of Guadaloupe. AMDG!
