Our Lady of Kibeho
In November, 1981 a group of young girls at Kibeho College, a girls secondary school in Rwanda began to experience a series of Marian apparitions which have come to be called Our Lady of Kibeho.
In these visions, Our Lady warned of a terrible war, and asked people to pray the even sorrows rosary. In 1994 terrible war did indeed come to Rwanda as civil war and genocide led to over a million deaths. The parish church in Kibeho was the site of one of these massacres.
In 2001 Bishop Augustin Misago of the Diocese of Gikongoro in Rwanda recognized Our Lady of Kibeho as an authentic apparition of the Virgin Mary.
This image is one of a group of eight commissioned for the Duke University Newman Center. The priest sponsoring this project wanted to feature the Marian apparitions which were most important to students from different countries around the world. Students from many countries were interviewed to select these eight apparitions of Our Lady. Together, the display is called Our Lady of The World, and the many ways that Our Lady has appeared to us remind us of her universal motherhood to all believers.
The eight images are: Our Lady of Aparecida, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Lavang, Our Lady of Manaoag, Our Lady of Kibeho, Our Lady of Vilankanni, Our lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Guadalupe. AMDG!
