Immaculate Heart of Mary
The Immaculate Heart of Mary is painted here in the Western style. The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is inspired by the passage in St. Luke’s gospel in which the prophet Simeon tells Mary that her heart will be pieced by a sword, and afterwards “Mary kept all these things in her heart” and contemplated them.
Our Lady is wearing her traditional blue robe and a crown of roses topped with a crown embellished with actual jewels. Roses in depictions of Mary represent her purity.
On the original icon, the jewels on the crown were sent in by the women of Heart of Mary, the women’s group that commissioned the image. Decorating icons with real jewels is very traditional in the Eastern Church. Famous icons such as Our Lady of Częstochowa are embellished with many jewels which have been donated by members of the faithful as offerings to the Church.
The icon hangs in St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church in California.
