Byzantine Divine Mercy - Here we see the image of Christ of the Divine Mercy portrayed in a Byzantine style icon.
The traditional Divine Mercy image is based on a painting made by St. Faustina after a series of visions sent to her by Christ in which He encouraged devotion to His Divine Mercy. The Divine Mercy is traditionally portrayed in a more Western style.
In this icon Christ is surrounded by a mandorla, an almond-shaped frame that is used to depict moments in salvation history that transcend time and space. The word mandorla means ‘almond’ in Italian, describing its shape. Christ is identified by the letters ICXC in the top corners, which are a traditional abbreviation for Jesus Christ in Greek.
At the bottom appears the phrase ‘Jesus I Trust In You’, which St. Faustina was instructed by Christ to include in her image of the Divine Mercy. Christ is shown with the red and blue beams of light symbolizing the blood and water that flowed out of his side when it was pierced by a Roman soldier’s lance on the cross.
