Blessed Miguel Pro - Martyr of the Cristero War Icon Print

In the face of political persecution, Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J., went to his death with outstretched arms and the cry of ¡Viva Cristo Rey! (Long live Christ the King) on his lips. A Mexican Jesuit priest who ministered in secret during the brutal Cristero War, Father Pro was arrested on a false charge and executed without trial on November 23, 1927. His final posture, arms extended in the form of a cross, became one of the most iconic images of Catholic martyrdom in the modern era.

Vivian Imbruglia's icon captures Blessed Miguel Pro in his Jesuit cassock, holding a crucifix and palm branch — the classic emblems of the priesthood and martyrdom — alongside the Rituale Romanum, the book of the sacred rites he risked his life to administer. The Sacred Heart burns in the upper corner. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988, his feast day is celebrated on November 23.
