Born in Egypt in the year 251, Anthony was left without parents at the age of 20, at which point he gave away his substantial inheritance and left for a life of asceticism.
He spent the remainder of his life immerse in varying degrees of hermitage, including in leading a community of hermits for a time. He was continually attacked with ever more creative spiritual and physical temptations, and never seemed to be in poor health in spite of his fasting and self-denial.
Anthony the Great is also known for refutations of Arianism.
