This icon is a depiction of Mater Admirabiles, a painting originally done in 1844 by Pauline Perdrau, a young postulant at the monastery of Trinità dei Monti in France. When it was first painted, the colors were much brighter. They were so bright that the Mother Superior was mortified and had the fresco covered with a cloth so that no one would see it.
The fresco stayed covered until Pope Puis IX visited the church and asked to see what was underneath the cloth. By this time, the colors had faded to be much softer, and he dubbed the painting ‘Mother Most Admirable’. Mater Admirables’ feast day is on October 20th.
In this icon of Mater Admirabiles, the Sacred Heart with its crown of thorns appears in the upper left border and the Immaculate Heart, pierced by a sword and crowned with roses, appears in the upper right.
This painting is ordered most often by Sacred Heart schools or churches. AMDG!
