I consider it one of the great honors of writing icons that I've been an instrument to bring beauty, joy and inspiration to many men and women in the religious life, to priests, and even to bishops. Below I share a few occasions when I've been able to deliver an icon to one of these generous people.

A Carmelite's Journey

Gifted to Sister Gloria Theresa. This Icon, written for her 25th Anniversary, details in art the story of a Carmelite's journey.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus

Below is my dear friend, Father Victor, holding his icon. For his ordination, I asked what Icon he would like for his ordination gift, convinced that he would request a Capuchin saint. He asked for time to consider it, and when he called me back, he surprised me. He wanted the Sacred Heart of Jesus - he said his grandmother had one like this hanging in her home. I surprised him and had it delivered to a retreat he was attending. He called me later to thank me, saying that when he first saw it he cried and kissed Jesus on the cheek.

Divine Mercy

Several wonderful ladies chipped in to commission this Divine Mercy icon as a gift for Fr. Arinze on the occasion of his Ordination.

The traditional Divine Mercy image is based on a painting made by St. Faustina after a series of visions sent to her by Christ in which He encouraged devotion to His Divine Mercy. The Divine Mercy is traditionally portrayed in a more Western style. At the bottom appears the phrase "Jesus I Trust In You", which St. Faustina was instructed by Christ to include in her image of the Divine Mercy. Christ is shown with the red and blue beams of light symbolizing the blood and water that flowed out of his side when it was pierced by a Roman soldier's lance on the cross.

St. Norbert

This icon was originally painted for a Norbertine Priest, Father Norbert, at Saint Michael's Abby in California.

Of all the beautiful symbols on the icon, why a spider on the Chalice? Once while celebrating Mass a large and poisonous spider fell into the chalice after the consecration. St. Norbert could have removed the spider, but he preferred to consume it instead because he did not want a drop of the Precious Blood of Christ to be lost. He then remained before the altar and waited to die. As he waited he was disturbed by an itching in his nose he scratched it and suddenly he sneezed expelling the whole spider. He lived to celebrate many more Masses.

Saint Maximillian & Saint John Paul II Icon

This icon was commissioned on the occasion of an Ordination, by a priest with a special devotion to both Saints Maximilian Kolbe and John Paul II. He received an original icon with gold foil details, along with a full complement of Holy Ordination cards featuring this art to commemorate the day of this great sacrament for him and his family.
