Saint Margaret of Scotland ready to frame print.
Born into the Anglo-Saxon royal family not long before the invasion of England by the Normans, Princess Margaret and her family fled north to Scotland after King Harold II was killed in the Battle of Hastings. There she married Malcolm III of Scotland in 1070. She had eight children: three of her sons would go on to reign as kings of Scotland, and her daughter Edith married Henry I of England.
Queen Margaret was a devoted wife and mother, but also was devoted to the Church and to caring for the poor. Although her husband, King Malcolm, was not particularly religious, he respected her personally and supported her in her work. In her spare time, she made beautiful covers for her prayer book and book of the Gospels, decorating them with gold, jewels, and embroidery. The beauty of these books helped to impress her husband King Malcolm, who was not himself able to read. In this icon, St. Margaret can we seen in her royal robes and holding her beloved book of the Gospels.
St. Margaret was canonized in 1250 and her feast day is on November 16th.
This icon was painted as a gift from a Godparent to his Godchild.
