As you may know, the inspiring letters AMDG have continued to kindle an artistic fire within my soul for many years. This constant reminder that every small thing I do is for God's glory has been the driving force behind some of my most lovely works, and especially behind some of the works that I almost quit. The origins of the Latin phrase "Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam" go back to Ignatius' devotion to using every aspect of his life for God's glory, so I could not go long without creating an icon featuring symbols from his life story.
Born in 1491 in the Basque region of Spain, Saint Ignatius underwent a remarkable transformation that would shape the course of his life and the lives of many others. From a young soldier in search of glory and honor, he evolved into a priest and humble servant of God, embodying the essence of AMDG in all he did.
The foundation of Saint Ignatius' spiritual philosophy lies in the Ignatian Spirit—embracing a life of selflessness, humility, and devotion to God's will. The profound impact of this spirit is evident in the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits, an order he founded in 1540. The Jesuits' emphasis on theology, education, and service continues to resonate across the globe to this day.
Saint Ignatius' unwavering faith in the splendor of God's creation serves as an inspiration in my artistic endeavors. Through my art, I strive to render symbols from and likenesses of lives of the saints, angels, and the Divine, utilizing the beautiful traditional art form of iconography. Each creation becomes an act of worship, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide my hand and fill my heart.
I feel immense gratitude for the life and teachings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola as an embodiment of a person who seeks only God's glory.
Let us remember Saint Ignatius for the light he ignited in the hearts of countless faithful, urging them to seek God's glory in everything they do.
