I painted this icon for the first church that would be named after this beautiful saint. I have to admit I knew nothing about this saint so in order to write this icon correctly I needed to research this Saint in order to place the proper symbols in it.I sturdy and study this beautiful saint and watched a few movies. I was in awe over him. A priest friend of mine was heading to El Salvador to walk in the same steps of St. Oscar Romero.
I asked him to bring be back some soil from El Salvador I wasn’t really sure why but that’s what I asked him to bring me. As I continued to research I read about the mascaras that took place about the tens of thousand that were murdered in the streets. When my pastor returned home he presented me with soil from where one of the massacres took place. To honor those that lost their lives I took the soil and ground it to dust and placed it in the paint. It was a way to honor these individuals, many who lost their lives because of their faith. This was one of the most moving icons I have written. AMDG!
