Saint Lucy ready to frame print
Saint Lucia or Lucy was one of the Roman martyrs of the early Church. She and Saint Agatha (an earlier Roman martyr who healed St. Lucia’s mother of a bleeding disorder as a result of Lucia’s prayers) are mentioned together in the Roman Canon of the Mass.
Although she had been betrothed to a wealthy pagan young man, Lucia wished to remain a consecrated virgin. In accordance with Christ’s advice in the Gospels to the rich young man, she decided to give away her wealth, the money that would have served as her dowry, to the poor. When her pagan fiance heard of this, he denounced her to the civil authorities as a Christian.
The Roman governor ordered her to make a sacrifice to the emperor, but she refused. He then ordered his soldiers to drag her away, but they were miraculously unable to move her. Next they attempted to stack wood around her and burn her, but the wood refused to burn. Finally, she was executed with a sword thrust into her neck. According to some stories, the Romans also took out her eyes, and as a result St. Lucy is the patron saint of the blind. After her martyrdom, when the local Christians went to bury her body, they found that her eyes had been miraculously restored.
Here St. Lucia is shown wearing the red of a martyr and holding a palm branch which symbolizes eternal life. She is holding a lamp and stands in front of a background of stars. This is a reference to her name, which comes from the Latin word Lux for Light.
This icon was written for a woman whose mother, Lucy, had recently died, as a reminder that her mother wound always be a light to her family even though she now is in the eternal light of God. St. Lucy’s feast day is December 13th. AMDG
