Our Lady of Palestine is the fitting star of this icon, as she offers her protection to the Holy Land. But in this icon she is surrounded by reminders of the order of knights and dames, who for more than one thousand years have committed to join her in this mission. Within the border are images calling to mind, The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, including individually formed three dimensional shields, helmets, even the pilgrim’s shell, along with smaller images of the a select handful of important historical figures.
The original icon was created on a birch panel in the traditional method, using more than 600 sheets of 24k Italian gold leaf.
This truly one of a kind image was created by iconographer Dame Vivian Imbruglia, DHS, for the 2023 Western Lieutenancy Annual Meeting.
As early as the 11th Century, Mary was prayed to as the patroness of the Holy Land by the crusader kingdoms who sought to liberate the Holy Land from Islamic rule. In 1927, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem created the feast day of Our Lady of Palestine on October 25 as a time to pray through the intercession of Our Lady for peace in the land where Christ and Our Lady lived out their early lives in a place which since that time has too often been rent by war and conquest.
Today, the shrine to Our Lady of Palestine is located midway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The inscription of the church reads “Regina Palaestinae” (the Queen of Palestine.
