Our Lady of Czestochowa
The icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland is perhaps the most famous icon in the world. The origins of Our Lady of Czestochowa are still unclear. Some pious legends even claim that it was painted by St. Luke the Evangelist and was once owned by Emperor Constantine the Great.
It is believed that the icon was originally created in Constantinople and it was brought to Czestachowa in the 14th century by King Wladyslaw II Jagiello of Poland.
The original icon was damaged by thieves in 1430. The paint used to repair it erased much of the original image, which had to be repainted again afterward.
Our Lady of Czestochowa is called the Queen and Protector of Poland, and many miracles are attributed to her intercession. There is also devotion to Our Lady of Czestochowa in Haiti, after some Polish soldiers who helped fight for Haitian Revolution brought copies of the icon (sometimes called the Black Madonna due to its darkened colors) with them to Haiti.
This image is one of a group of eight commissioned for the Duke University Newman Center. The priest sponsoring this project wanted to feature the Marian apparitions which were most important to students from different countries around the world. Students from many countries were interviewed to select these eight apparitions of Our Lady. Together, the display is called Our Lady of The World, and the many ways that Our Lady has appeared to us remind us of her universal motherhood to all believers.
The eight images are: Our Lady of Aparecida, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Lavang, Our Lady of Manaoag, Our Lady of Kibeho, Our Lady of Vilankanni, Our lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Guadalupe. AMDG!
