Our Lady of La Vang Icon Print

Our Lady of La Vang

The apparition of Our Lady of Lavang appeared to Vietnamese Catholics in 1798.

At that time, Catholics were being persecuted by the Vietnamese Emperor Cảnh Thịnh. Many Catholics had taken refuge in the rainforest of  La Vang in Quang Tri Province.

Each night these persecuted Catholics gathered to pray the rosary together. One night Our Lady of Lavang appeared as they prayed, taking the form of a young woman in traditional Vietnamese dress and carrying a small child, accompanied by two angels.

Many of the Catholics had become sick while hiding in the rainforest, and Our Lady told them to boil the leaves growing on the trees, the resulting brew healed those who were ill. Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of La Vang is located in Quang Tri, Vietnam.

This image is one of a group of eight commissioned for the Duke University Newman Center. The priest sponsoring this project wanted to feature the Marian apparitions which were most important to students from different countries around the world. Students from many countries were interviewed to select these eight apparitions of Our Lady. Together, the display is called Our Lady of The World, and the many ways that Our Lady has appeared to us remind us of her universal motherhood to all believers.

The eight images are: Our Lady of Aparecida, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Lavang, Our Lady of Manaoag, Our Lady of Kibeho, Our Lady of Vilankanni, Our lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Guadalupe. AMDG!
