They prayed to Our Lady after finding no fish, and immediately after praying their nets brought up a statue of the Virgin Mary. After this, they caught many fish.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe statue was venerated as Our Lady of the Conception Who Appeared.  It has found particular devotion among Afro-Brazilians.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe original statue of Our Lady of Aparecida is wrapped in a stiff, blue cloak that is embroidered with gold thread. The Brazilian and Vatican flags are stitched onto the cloak, and an Imperial crown sits on her head.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn this icon, Our Lady of Aparecida is shown in her traditional blue robe and crown, decorated with stones, and emblazoned with the flags of Brazil and the Vatican.  Brazil has the largest Catholic population of any country in the world, with more than 175 million Catholics as of 2020.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis image is one of a group of eight commissioned for the Duke University Newman Center. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJuan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time Juan’s uncle became seriously ill. This led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn December 12, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. Written by Vivian Imbrulia, the icon captures many spiritual themes of Fatima, as well as being inspired and based off the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue. In this way, Imbrulia captured many of the expressions found in the famous and miraculous statue and transferred them into the face of the Icon itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe overall image of our Lady of Fatima is done in classic Eastern Iconography with the Byzantine folds of her gown and mantle, but the softness of her face represents a more Ukrainian style than the sterner Greek style found in other icons.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eSurrounding the face of Our Lady is a halo in 24k gold paint, outlined with twelve stars representing the Twelve Apostles. Christ is surrounded by gold while Our Lady is surrounded in a blue background, depicting the difference between Heaven and Earth. Below our Lady are three doves, representing both the Trinity and the miracle of the doves. The miracle of the doves refers to the famous story of the very first Pilgrim Virgin Statue pilgrimage from Fatima to Lisbon and back in 1946, when three doves flew to the feet of Our Lady in the village of Bombarral outside Lisbon and kept vigil there until the pilgrimage and ceremonies at Fatima were complete. Both represent the entire Apostolic Church of Christ, both East and West, and the equal importance of Fatima to both Churches. I had finished painting Our Lady holding and the infant she was holding. However, something felt missing. I felt a nudge to paint roses cascading from her hands and around the infant, almost as if she were gathering our prayers for the little one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy artist brain suggested that I make sure the number of roses was uneven, so I counted them. To my surprise, there were 10, just like a decade of the rosary. So, I added one red rose, symbolizing the Our Father. White roses symbolize the joys and purity of the Virgin Mary, while red roses represent the passion of Jesus Christ and Mary’s participation in his suffering. All of this happened on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Remember that it’s said that when we pray a rosary, we’re placing roses in Our Lady’s crown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI believed I had completed the icon and brought it downstairs to display on an easel for viewing, as I am accustomed to do. The spirit’s guidance suggested that something was amiss. I decided to return it upstairs. Initially, I had painted various colors of roses surrounding Our Lady. I then decided to paint them all white, representing the Hail Marys we pray during the rosary. Additionally, I added a few red roses to symbolize our fathers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile repainting the roses, a friend texted me to inform me that she had seen the image I was working on on social media (where I often share updates and my work). She inquired about the availability of copies of this icon on my website. She was deeply drawn to the image. I explained the commission and the intended placement of the icon. She then shared her story of spending countless days and nights in the NICU with her own daughter, nearly losing her at one point. She expressed how comforting this image would have been for her.
