There he met other monks, some living as hermits and others living in communities. When the abbot of a nearby monastery died, Benedict was asked to assume the leadership of the monastery. However, it was not a success. The monks found his rules too strict and some of them tried to poison him. For a time Benedict returned to living as a solitary monk, but eventually he gathered like minded followers. He founded a number of monasteries, including the famous hilltop monastery of Monte Cassino between Rome and Naples. Saint Benedict wrote a rule describing how monks in community should lead their life in work and prayer. However, after a period as a prisoner of war in which he suffered a protracted illness, he experienced a vision in which he was called to follow Christ and to give up worldly possessions. After this, he spent much time in prayer in the small chapel of San Damiano, which contained a crucifix icon. One day, while in prayer, he heard Christ speak to him from the icon saying, “Francis, go and repair My church which, as you can see, is falling into ruins.” At first, Francis took this order literally and collected money to rebuild the physical chapel in which he had heard the voice. During fighting between Christians and Muslims in the Middle East, Francis traveled to Egypt and personally preached to the Sultan in hopes of converting him and bringing an end to the war. On September 13, 1224, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, Francis had a vision of a seraph, a six-winged angel, and the Cross, from which he received the stigmata: the wounds of Christ. St. Francis carried these wounds in his hands, feet, and side for the remaining two years of his life. He was beheaded at Tower Hill on June 22, 1535, fulfilling his prophecy that he would be treated like John the Baptist. At the age of eighteen, he moved to Krakow to attend Jagiellonian University, where he became deeply involved in theater and proved to have a great talent for learning languages. However, in 1939 Germany and the USSR invaded Poland and the university was closed. Over the next few years, he worked as a dishwasher, in a chemical factory, and in a limestone quarry, where he was injured in a work accident in which he was hit by a truck. When not working, he found time to follow his theatrical interests in secret (Polish cultural activities were banned by the Nazis) and he began to discern a vocation to the priesthood. For a time he was treated in one of Rome's religious hospitals, but he was kicked out for quarrelsome behavior. At last, he found a job with the Capuchins as a laborer. He was ordained in 1584 and founded the Order of Clerks Regular, Ministers of the Infirm, usually called the Camillians for short. Although she felt drawn to the religious life, at the age of fifteen in obedience to her parents, she married Doctor Pascual Rojas, a prominent physician who was twice her age. Their life together was happy, a mutual growing in love of God and neighbor. God did not grant them children. They trusted and decided together that the poor would be their children. They built the little Hospital of the Sacred Heart to serve those less fortunate. After fourteen years of married life Maria Luisa was left a widow. Many others attracted by her charisma began to join her.

The Archbishop re-appeared and told her that she would have to join an existing religious Congregation. This time the Archbishop himself suggested that she found a Religious Congregation and the Carmelite Sisters of the Sacred Heart were established on February 2, 1921.
